Day 3 was certainly the most exciting day so far in the 2022 U.S. Senior, U.S. Junior, & U.S. Girls’ Junior Championships. Although the Senior Championship saw a peaceful day with only one decisive game, the Girls’ and Junior Championships brought unexpected and heartbreaking results.

2022 U.S. National Championships - Day 2 Recap

Day 2 brought another exciting day of chess at the 2022 U.S. Senior, U.S. Junior, & U.S. Girls’ Junior Championships. Compared to Round 1, many more games were drawn. The Senior Championship (or the Legends’ event, as the commentators like to call it) had the most decisive games this round with two players sharing the lead with 1.5 points GM’s Larry Christiansen and Igor Novikov. In the Junior and Girls’ Junior sections, GM Andrew Hong and WFM Sopie Morris-Suzuki are sole leaders with 2/2.

2022 U.S. National Championships - Day 1 Recap

The 2022 U.S. Senior, U.S. Junior, and U.S. Girls’ Junior Championships kicked off today at the Saint Louis Chess Club. The event features 20 top junior and 10 top senior players in the country. The combined prize fund for all the events amounts to over $130,000. Along with winning the title, the winner of the Junior section is set to receive an invitation to the U.S. Championship later this year. Both the winners of the U.S. Junior and Girls’ Junior Championships will be awarded a $10,000 scholarship, jointly supported by US Chess and Dewain Barber.

Ian Nepomniachtchi seals the tournament victory with a rocky draw against Jan-Krzysztof Duda, putting a historical Candidates score 9,5 points out of 14 in the books. Ding Liren beats Hikaru Nakamura in a rollercoaster of a game to claim the second place.
