The second round of the 2018 U.S. Championships was as promising as the first. With plenty of exciting matches on the horizon, the chess fans gathered to see the players at work; they weren’t disappointed, as we once again got a combative round in the books.

The first day of the 2018 U.S. & U.S. Women’s Chess Championships kicked off with a plethora of exciting matchups that were surely going to bring the fire to the board, the commentary booth, and to all the fans across the world that chose to tune in. And it did not disappoint!

Few names in U.S. Chess are more recognizable than Grandmaster Yasser Seirawan. A four-time U.S. Champion and former World Championship contender, Seirawan was the dominant force in American chess in the 1980s.

U.S. and U.S. Women’s Chess Championship to be Held at the Saint Louis Chess Club

SAINT LOUIS (January 8, 2018) – For the tenth consecutive year, the Saint Louis Chess Club will host the U.S. Chess Championship and U.S. Women’s Chess Championship. Since the 2009 Championships, the Chess Club has awarded more than two million dollars in prize money, with an additional $294,000 on the line for this year’s 24 competitors.

Regulations

Format Summary

  1. Prompt Arrival: Players are expected to be at the board before each round begins.
  2. No Draws: Players may not mutually agree to a draw in less than 30 moves.
  3. Electronics: No electronics are allowed in the playing area.
  4. Time Control: 90 minutes for the first 40 moves, followed by 30 minutes for the rest of the game with an additional 30 seconds (increment) per move starting from move 1.

The 2018 U.S. Women's Championship is an elite national championship event, featuring 12 of the strongest female chess players in America. Over the course of eleven rounds, these competitors will battle for $100,000 in prize money, qualification into the Women's World Championship cycle, and the coveted title of 2018 U.S. Women's Champion.
